In this new age of smart phones, laptops, and other high tech devices, it’s safe to say we are moving fast in the world of technology. Just as there are multiple positive ways to use these new devices, there are also negative ones.. There’s no doubt on how horrible bullying is but when it’s applied online, it does even more damage. It will affect them whenever they decide to go online and even worse, it’s public for everyone to see. This results in ultimate devastation as well as damaging effects that may last for a lifetime. With this essay, I am proposing that the damaging effects of cyberbullying can affect all types of people and that by taking action now, we can begin to eliminate the devastating consequences it may cause for the next generation.
Based off observation, cyberbullying is psychologically damaging with lasting effects. I’ve seen it personally break my nephew’s self confidence. My nephew was born with a tick that mimics the symptoms of autism and after social media sites like Facebook and Formspring became popular, he would start receiving horrible messages making fun of him. It got to the point where he deleted all his accounts just so he didn’t have to deal with it. Another example I’ve seen first hand is a girl I went to high school with. She ended up sending revealing pictures to her boyfriend at the time which ended up finding their way online and she was harassed so much from it, she left the school. Cyberbullying is not only psychologically damaging but can drastically change the course of life for the victim.
I believe that in doing this research, I will find multiple things that back my opinion. I believe I will find a lot of personal stories from all types of different people that have been victims of cyberbullying, from students in high school to widely recognized celebrities. I believe I will learn about different types of cyberbullying and how these victims are getting through it. One of the most important things to find is why cyberbullying occurs. Without understanding why it begins, we will never be able to figure out how to stop it.
I intend to use sources that will accurately depict the truth behind cyberbullying. I believe using interviews from celebrities and personal accounts of this generation’s kids and teenagers who have been bullied online will give proof that anyone can be a victim of this current epidemic. I intend to use articles and websites about cyberbullying and how schools, families of victims, and any other groups have already tried to fight back. I’m hoping to find books on the psychological aspects of bullying and why people feel the need to bring others down. I intend to use these types of sources to back my argument in stating that cyberbullying is devastating to all types of people as well as their families and friends.
Cyberbullying has become a serious epidemic in today’s culture. It’s brought about broken self confidence, harmful psychological effects, and unfortunately, suicidal thoughts. With this essay, I intend to show that these awful results can happen to anyone. From the girl I went to high school with to celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, cyberbullying can drastically change the way others see the victim and ultimately change their career path. I also believe that by finding out why this has become so serious in today’s world, we will also find ways to take a proactive stand against cyberbullying.
